Looking for a free Thanksgiving turkey? Several of the nation’s largest supermarket chains are offering them again this year, though it depends on how much you are willing to spend on your feast to get one.
Most retailers with free turkey deals require shoppers to spend at least $125, and as much as $400, to qualify for a turkey, ham or related item for the Thanksgiving table.
Still, any savings are good news for American consumers, who continue to face an ongoing affordability crisis. Grocery prices have risen nearly 3% since last Thanksgiving, according to the Consumer Price Index.
Meanwhile, wholesale prices for turkey hens have jumped 40% from a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Outbreaks of avian influenza, or bird flu, have reduced the nation’s turkey flock and contributed to these higher prices, per the USDA.
